SINGLE

An individual filing status is for those who, on the last day of the year, are unmarried or legally separated from their spouse under a divorce or separate maintenance decree, and do not qualify for another filing status.

MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY

Married spouses who are filing separate tax returns. This method may be beneficial if an individual wants to be responsible only for their own tax, or if this method results in less tax than a joint return.

MARRIED FILING JOINTLY

An individual who is currently married and filing with their spouse. The individual and their spouse must agree to file a joint return. This status is also applicable if the individual’s spouse passed the year of filing.

HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD

One who is considered unmarried on the last day of the year and has paid more than half of household costs. A requirement for this status is to have had a qualifying person live with you for more than half the year, not including temporary absences like school.

QUALIFYING WIDOW(ER) WITH DEPENDENT CHILD

An individual may file under this status for two years following the death of their spouse. If the individual’s spouse passed during the current filing year, the individual can use Married Filing Jointly as their filing status. The spouse’s year of death is the last year for which an individual can file jointly with the deceased spouse.

QUALIFYING WIDOW(ER) WITHOUT
DEPENDENT CHILD

You can still use married filing jointly with your deceased spouse for the year of death — unless you remarry during that year.
